What Is a Secured Credit Card? Start With the Deposit

A deposit, a credit limit and a monthly bill are three different things. Here is how they fit together.

A secured credit card requires a security deposit. You still borrow when you buy something, receive a bill and need to repay it. The deposit does not turn the card into prepaid spending money. Whether a particular account helps build your credit depends on reporting and how you manage it.

Follow the money in a simple example

Imagine a fictional card with a $200 deposit, a $200 limit and no fees. You transfer $200 to open the account, then buy $35 of groceries. Your available credit is now $165, and you owe a $35 card bill. You do not subtract the groceries from your deposit and forget about the bill.

A $200 deposit is separate from a $35 monthly bill.

If you repay that $35 and there are no other charges, the balance returns to zero. The deposit is still held under the account agreement. This example describes the arithmetic, not the terms of a real offer.

What to look for before applying

  • Which credit bureaus receive the account information?
  • How much cash must you provide, and when?
  • Are there annual, monthly or other fees?
  • What does the agreement say about returning the deposit?
  • Is there a published route to an unsecured account?

Put those answers into a note before starting an application. A product name such as “credit builder” is not a substitute for its agreement. A deposit requirement also does not mean approval is guaranteed.

Choose a manageable first purchase

For an educational practice budget, start with a purchase you already planned and can repay from money available to you. A $200 credit limit is a borrowing ceiling, not a monthly spending target. If the opening deposit uses all your spare cash, pause and work through the next bill before committing.

What this card cannot promise

No secured card guarantees a particular score increase or approval for a future loan. We do not predict how many points an account will add. Use the utilization calculator to understand the numbers, then read the guide to using the account.
